Student Empowerment Academy

once again we saw the theme of smaller learning communities so it can become more of a family. The students work together to make sure everyone succeeds. When I asked about bullying, students commented that it really doesn't happen here. I think is is partially due to the kind of student in the program and the smaller learning communities but also because of the project based curriculum. Students learn to rely on each other to complete a project and be successful.

  1. Our visit today was amazing. Incredible students and incredible teachers. What I take away is a reminder that relationships are what matter. No matter the circumstances or the barriers, when teachers and students care about each other deep learning can happen and lives can be changed.

  2. One of the impressive things about this school was that it was in the middle of south central LA and the students we spoke to all had plans to go on and further their education after high school. There was poverty all around them and they were able to see a brighter future for themselves. The 3 students who gave us the tour of the school were some of the nicest kids you could hope to be around. None of their parents went on to college and one of the parents only attended school through the 6th grade. The projects that they do during the school year have sparked an interest in them that may to have existed if they were in a traditional classroom.
